Philippine Space Week kicked off at Gateway Mall 2

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) kicked off on August 9 the celebration of Philippine Space Week with a three-day exhibit and other activities the public could visit for free at the Quantum Skyview of Gateway Mall 2.

"We invite everyone to join the Philippine Space Week events to discover and celebrate our Yamang Kalawakan. Together, we will continue to nurture, strengthen, and harness this ecosystem for the benefit of Filipinos," PhilSA Director General Joel Marciano Jr. said.

The theme "Yamang Kalawakan ay Likas sa Ating Bagong Pilipinas” (Natural Space Treasures for a New Philippines) highlights the contribution of space capabilities to science-based policies and actions and digital transformation.

"It captures the inherent and important role that space capabilities play in building a modern, peaceful, resilient, and prosperous Philippines," Marciano added.

Marciano said PhilSA used the term “Yamang Kalawakan” to refer to the people, institutions, policies, environment, and infrastructure that constitute the country's collective resources and capacity in space science and technology and its applications

"Embodying our country’s space ecosystem also emphasizes the significance of seizing opportunities in the global space economy for the country’s sustained progress and prosperity," he said.

The exhibit showcases SSTA (space science and technology and its applications) programs and activities, including the development of the Multispectral Unit for Land Assessment satellite.

"There will also be participation from government agencies, academe and the private sector which will feature their activities related to the utilization of satellite data and technologies, and space-related projects, products and services," Marciano said.

The Philippine Space Week 2024 scheduled on August 8 to 14 marks five years since the signing of the Philippine Space Act and the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Philippine Space Policy and the PhilSA.
