Art, dance, music to celebrate Independence Day in Araneta Center

On June 12, the Araneta Center will hold “Sining, Saliw, at Sayaw,” a celebration to mark the 121st anniversary of the declaration of Philippine independence.

To celebrate Sining, the Araneta Center will hold three events, the first of which is year’s edition of Sineng Malaya. Already on its fifth year, Gateway Gallery mounts Sineng Malaya on June 12 to screen the movies “Kababaihan ng Rebolusyon” and “May Pag-Asa Ang Bantayog ni Andres Bonifacio” at 3pm and 5pm.

The Likhang Lokal trade fair also aims to celebrate the artistry of indigenous communities. From June 9-13, there will be a bazaar at the Gateway Mall featuring indigenous and local products from the partner communities of SPARK (Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran) found all across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Sining isn’t just about consuming art; creating is just as important. During Independence Day, there will be a Freedom Wall at the Farmers Plaza where people can write their thoughts on what this day means to them. Afterward, they can avail of the free photo booth.

During the entire afternoon of Independence Day, a band will be serenading the Farmers Plaza in Araneta Center’s OPM Acoustic Jam, the first of two events to commemorate Saliw.

The other is the Malaya Street Concert at Manhattan Row, which will be headlined by Urbandub, the band responsible for the hits “The Fight Is Over” and “First of Summer”; Oh Flamingo!, Bita and the Botflies, May, and Lazed Nap’t. Aside from the performance of the bands, there will be games and an online raffle. Registration for the concert will start at 4pm.

Finally, to celebrate Sayaw, there will be the Retro Fitness OPM Dance Party at the Ali Mall Activity Area led by Bennie Almonte, the creator of Retro Fitness, the first Filipino-made fitness routine brand. Those who come in their most creative Filipiniana-inspired outfit will have a chance to win gift certificates from Novotel. Aside from the dance party, there will also be Aerozumba by Slimmers World and different games. Registration will start at 12:30 PM.
